This is the typical western route to Arunachal. You depart from Guwahati at river level and six days later you find yourself at 4,572 metres at Bumla on the Indo-China border, having crossed Nechiphu and then Sela on your way. In between are Bhalukpong on the Kameng, apple orchards and hot springs at Dirang, the 340-year-old Tawang Monastery, and frozen tree stumps at Sangetsar Lake.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Pickup from Guwahati airport or railway station from 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM. The first day of your Arunachal Pradesh package tour from Guwahati is the easiest ride, a flat Assam road through Nagaon and Tezpur, across the Kolia Bhomora Setu over the Brahmaputra and up to the Assam-Arunachal border. It will take about 3:00 PM to reach Bhalukpong.
Bhalukpong is only 213 metres above sea level on the bank of Kameng, the last time you will be near sea level for a week. This is the checkpoint for your ILP. The town is not very eventful, just walk down to the river or, if you get here early enough, it's 5 km on to the Tipi Orchid Research Centre, which is worth an hour.
A practical note: This is your last easy day for cash. ATMs are there in Tezpur, not Tawang.
- Overnight at Bhalukpong
After breakfast the road starts climbing and does not stop. Today you will gain approximately 1,300 metres. The first stop is the Tipi Orchid Research Centre, where you'll find several thousand orchid plants across a few hundred species. It is definitely worth 45 minutes, especially between March and May when more of it is in flower.
After Tipi, the road narrows to the Kameng gorge where in a couple of spots the cascades plunge onto the asphalt. The crossing of the Nechiphu Pass is at 1,700 m. The Nechiphu Tunnel removes much of the misty portion of the journey, but still make sure you pull over at the old viewpoint above it, provided it is a nice clear morning and you can catch the entire Kameng valley.
The most underrated place on this route is Dirang at 1,560 metres. You can find a 500-year-old Dirang Dzong (stone fort village still inhabited, not converted into a tourist site), hot sulphur springs, apple and kiwi plantations and even the National Research Centre on Yak.

The big day of your Arunachal tour from Guwahati. Early breakfast and a 7:30 AM departure, because weather on this stretch is best in the morning.
You climb from Dirang to Sela Pass at 4,170 metres (13,700 ft), one of the highest motorable passes in India, with Sela Lake sitting frozen beside the road for much of the winter. This is the route we take, over the top, because the view from the pass is the reason people drive this road in the first place.
There is now an alternative. The Sela Tunnel opened in March 2024, running at around 3,000 metres below the snow line and cutting roughly an hour off the drive. It matters to your trip as insurance rather than as the itinerary: where heavy snow used to shut this road for days at a time, the tunnel keeps Tawang reachable year-round. If the pass top is closed on your travel day, you go through the tunnel and lose the viewpoint, not the day.
Descending toward Jang you stop at Jaswant Garh, the memorial to Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat of the 4th Garhwal Rifles, who held this position during the 1962 war and was awarded the Mahavir Chakra posthumously. The Army still maintains it and still serves tea to travellers. Then Nuranang Falls (also called Jang Falls), a roughly 100-metre drop through dense forest, reached by a short flight of steps off the highway. Arrive Tawang mid-afternoon at 3,048 metres.
Practical note: Today is your largest single altitude gain. Drink more water than feels necessary, eat light at lunch, and do not plan anything strenuous this evening.

A full day in town, and deliberately so. This is your acclimatisation day before Bumla.
Tawang Monastery (Galden Namgey Lhatse) is the largest monastery in India and the second largest in the world, founded around 1680-81 by Merak Lama Lodre Gyatso. It contains an 8-metre gilded Buddha, a collection of manuscripts and a museum. Allow 90 minutes minimum. It is worth timing to arrive at the morning prayer session.
Urgelling Monastery is located 5 km out and is much smaller and less visited. It is also the birthplace of the sixth Dalai Lama, Tsangyang Gyatso. It is not included in most tours. It is the quietest twenty minutes you will spend in Tawang.
Also today: the Tawang War Memorial, a 40-foot stupa commemorating the soldiers of the 1962 war, with a sound-and-light show most evenings; the Giant Buddha Statue above town; the Craft Centre, where you can watch Monpa weavers work and buy carpets directly; and the Tawang Monastery museum.

Start at 5:30 AM in a local vehicle. The road from Tawang quickly becomes a rocky and icy track, and the 37 km to Bumla takes about 2.5 hours.
The first stop is Pangateng Tso (PT Tso) glacial lake at 3,700 m, which is mostly frozen from November to March.
Bumla Pass at 4,572 metres is the Indo-China border, and one of the few points where Indian civilians can stand at the Line of Actual Control. Border Personnel Meetings are held here between the two armies. It is also the pass the 14th Dalai Lama crossed in 1959 when he entered India. Army officials typically greet visitors, provide a briefing, and serve tea. You will be at the pass for perhaps 30-40 minutes; the altitude is severe and the Army does not encourage lingering.
Sangetsar Lake, better known as Madhuri Lake since a Bollywood shoot in the 1990s, is on the way back. It was created by the earthquake of 1973 which flooded a stand of trees, and the dead trunks still stand in the water. It's the number one photographed thing in Tawang district and it earns it.
Practical notes: Photography is not permitted at and close to Bumla; do not violate Army instructions. Bring warm clothing with you even in May; it can be below freezing for much of the year. If you have any member of your group with heart or lung problems, reconsider this day.

Back over Sela, southbound, with the light on the other side of the range. If Day 03 was fogged in, this is your second chance at the view, and if the pass top is closed, the tunnel keeps the day on schedule.
The drive drops steadily to Bomdila at 2,415 metres, headquarters of West Kameng district. Bomdila is a working town rather than a tourist one, which is part of its appeal. Visit the Gontse Gaden Rabgyel Ling Monastery, consecrated by the 14th Dalai Lama, and the Upper and Lower Gompas. The viewpoint above town gives you the Kangto and Gorichen ranges on a clear evening.
The local market here is the best place on the route to buy Monpa carpets, thangkas and shawls, and prices are better than Tawang.

Early breakfast and an early departure at 7:00 AM. The road descends through Tenga and Bhalukpong back into Assam, then runs the highway to Guwahati.
Book your onward flight for after 6:00 PM. We are constantly asked about this and the truth is anything prior is uncomfortably tight. One landslide clearance or one convoy hold on the Tenga stretch can make a 7.5 hour drive a 9 hour one. If you have a flight in the morning then add a night in Guwahati.

What Moves the Price
Group size: It is the single biggest factor. Vehicle cost is fixed whether two people travel or six, so a couple pays substantially more per head than a family of six. If you are travelling as two, ask us about join-in group departures.
Season: October-November and March-April are peak. December-February is the high season for snow, and the New Year window is priced separately.
Hotel category: Standard means clean, heated, well-located properties. Deluxe means the better rooms in Tawang and Dirang, which in this region is a real difference because heating and hot water are not universal.
Vehicle: A Sumo for six and an Innova for four price differently, and the Bumla day is a separate local vehicle regardless.
Duration: Adding a Dirang or Tawang night, or extending toward Sangti Valley or Zemithang, changes the total.

Permits for Arunachal Pradesh – ILP, and What Foreigners Need
Arunachal Pradesh is a protected frontier state under the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation, 1873. Everyone who is not a resident of the state needs permission to enter, and it is checked at the Bhalukpong gate on this route.
Indian Nationals: Inner Line Permit (ILP)
Every Indian citizen who is not an Arunachal resident needs an Inner Line Permit. This is the only entry document you need for the whole of this itinerary, including Bhalukpong, Dirang, Tawang, and Bomdila, which are all covered by a standard tourist ILP.
To be clear, because a lot of travel sites get this wrong: Indian nationals do not need a Protected Area Permit for Tawang. PAP is the instrument that applies to foreign nationals. If a site tells you to apply to the Ministry of Home Affairs for a PAP to visit Tawang as an Indian passport holder, it is out of date or simply wrong.
Documents: a government photo ID (Aadhaar, Voter ID, passport or driving license), one recent passport-size photograph, and your travel dates and route.
Validity: a tourist ILP is valid for 15 days from your date of entry into the state, not from the date of issue. Extensions are possible from the local DC once you are inside.

Best Time to Visit Tawang and Arunachal Pradesh
Short answer: October to April. Everything below is the long answer.
October-November is the strongest window overall for an Arunachal Pradesh package tour from Guwahati. The monsoon has cleared, landslide risk drops sharply, the air is at its clearest for mountain views, and the roads are in their best condition of the year. Daytime temperatures in Tawang sit around 12-16°C. If you want one recommendation, this is it.
December-February is winter, and it is spectacular. Tawang gets snow, Sela and PT Tso freeze, and the whole circuit takes on a different character. Nights in Tawang drop below freezing and can reach -5°C or lower. Two things to know: the Sela Tunnel has made this season far more reliable than it used to be, since Tawang no longer gets cut off when the pass top closes; and Bumla is most likely to be refused in these months, because the road beyond the checkpost ices over. Come in winter for the snow, not for the border.
March-April brings spring. Rhododendrons come out across the Sela stretch, genuinely one of the better sights in the eastern Himalaya. Temperatures climb to 15 to 20°C by day, and everything is green again. The trade-off is more haze than autumn.
May-September is the monsoon, and we do not recommend it. West Kameng and Tawang districts take heavy rainfall. The Tenga-Bhalukpong stretch is landslide-prone, roads close without warning, views disappear into cloud, and a 7-hour drive can become a 12-hour one or an unplanned overnight. We will run the trip if you insist, but you should know what you are buying.
If Sela closes
Snowfall can still close the pass top even with the tunnel open. If that happens on your travel day, you go through the tunnel and lose the Sela viewpoint, and the itinerary continues. Prolonged heavy snow occasionally halts all movement; in that case we hold you safely in Dirang or Tawang and adjust. Extra nights in that situation are at cost, which is why we recommend keeping a buffer day if you travel December to February.

Note the December row carefully: some sites list December in Arunachal as mild, which is true of Itanagar at 500 m and completely untrue of Tawang.

You go from 213 m to 4,170 m in 48 hours. That is a fast profile by any standard, and mild altitude sickness, including headache, poor sleep, breathlessness on stairs, and loss of appetite, is common rather than unusual on Day 03 and Day 04. It is not dangerous in itself. What helps
- Drink 3 to 4 litres of water a day from Day 02 onward. Dehydration and altitude symptoms overlap almost entirely.
- Eat light at lunch on climbing days.
- No alcohol on Day 03 or Day 04. This is the single most effective thing on this list.
- Walk slowly in Tawang, especially when exploring sites included in your Arunachal Pradesh package. Everyone underestimates the stairs at the monastery.
- If you are considering acetazolamide (Diamox), speak to your doctor before you travel, not on the road.
When to reconsider the trip
If you or anyone in your group has significant cardiac disease, uncontrolled hypertension, severe asthma or COPD, sickle cell disease, or is in the third trimester of pregnancy, get medical clearance before booking. Bumla at 4,572 m is not a place to discover a problem, as the nearest hospital with any real capability is in Tezpur, ten hours away.
Oxygen is carried in our Bumla vehicles. Descent is the only real treatment, and Tawang is 1,500 m below the pass.
How to Reach the Start Point in Guwahati?
The tour begins and ends in Guwahati. Getting there is the easy part.
By Air: Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU) has direct flights from Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Pune. Arrive the night before Day 01. Our pickup is between 8:00 and 9:00 AM and the day ends with a five-hour drive. A same-morning arrival works only if you land before 7:30 AM.
By Rail: Guwahati Junction (GHY) is on the main network with direct trains from most metros, including Rajdhani, Saraighat and North East Express. Kamakhya (KYQ) is the alternative railhead.
By Road: NH-27 connects Guwahati to Siliguri and the rest of the region. If you are driving in, you can leave your vehicle in Guwahati. Private vehicles are permitted into Arunachal with an ILP, but the Sela and Bumla roads are unforgiving, and Bumla requires a local vehicle regardless.
Airports and railheads inside Arunachal, and why they don't apply here. Donyi Polo Airport at Hollongi near Itanagar opened in 2022 and Naharlagun has rail connectivity, which is genuinely useful if you are heading to Ziro or Itanagar. Neither helps for Tawang: both sit on the eastern side of the state, and the road from Itanagar to Tawang is longer and worse than the road from Guwahati. Guwahati remains the correct gateway for the western Arunachal circuit, and the start point of every Arunachal Pradesh package tour from Guwahati we run. Tezpur's Salonibari Airport is closer to Tawang at around 320 km but has minimal scheduled service.

What this trip does not include, honestly: river rafting on the Siang, Namdapha National Park, Ziro Valley, Mechuka and Itanagar's Ita Fort are all in Arunachal, but none of them is on the western circuit. They sit hundreds of kilometres east and require separate itineraries. We run those as different packages rather than pretend they fit into this one.
Who This Tour Suits
Good for: families with children aged 6 and up; couples; first-time visitors to the Northeast choosing an Arunachal Pradesh package tour from Guwahati; groups of friends; anyone who wants monasteries, mountains and military history in one route; photographers.

Anyone who needs reliable internet for work, as connectivity in Tawang is patchy at best.
Solo travellers: the route is safe and routinely travelled by solo visitors of all genders. The practical constraint is cost, as a single traveller carries the full vehicle charge. Ask about join-in departures.
Not suitable for: anyone on a tight schedule who cannot absorb a weather delay. This is a mountain border region; the road is the itinerary, and the road does not always cooperate.

Yes, and yes. Sela sees snow from roughly late November to March. Since the Sela Tunnel opened in March 2024 the route to Tawang stays open year-round even when the pass top is snowed under. You lose the viewpoint, not the journey. Prolonged heavy snowfall can still halt movement, so keep a buffer day if you travel in winter.

About 485 km on an Arunachal Pradesh package tour from Guwahati, split across two days: Guwahati to Bhalukpong on Day 01, then Bhalukpong to Dirang and Dirang to Tawang. It could technically be done in one very long day; it should not be, both for altitude and for road safety.
Partly. BSNL has the widest coverage in Arunachal, followed by Jio. Airtel and Vi are patchy. Prepaid SIMs from other states work but signal drops out for long stretches between Bhalukpong and Dirang, and at Sela and Bumla there is nothing at all. Data in Tawang town is usable but slow. Tell people at home you will be out of contact for parts of each day.
There are, but they run out of cash and go offline more often than you would like. Withdraw what you need in Guwahati or Tezpur. UPI works in Tawang town when the network holds and not at all on the road.
