Kamakhya Temple Darshan on Day 05

The timing of this part of the trip is probably the most critical, so read through this before booking onward travel.

What You Are Visiting

Kamakhya Devalaya is located in Nilachal Hill in the western part of Guwahati and is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas. The sanctum is not a typical shrine room with an image.

It is a cave chamber containing a rock formation kept moist by a natural spring, approached by a short flight of steps down. People coming in expecting a statue may be surprised, so it's helpful to know beforehand.

Temple Timings

As per the daily schedule provided by the temple, devotees have access to the temple from 8:00 AM. It is closed at 1:00 PM for cooked offerings to the goddess which are then distributed to the devotees, and it reopens at 2:30 PM before closing for the night at 5:15 PM. The programme differs on festival days, when the door opens at 9:00 AM and closes at sunset.

Closure of the temple at 1:00 PM forms the constraint on Day 05. Your group needs to reach Nilachal Hill and complete darshan before it.

Why the Darshan Slot Is Arranged in Advance

The normal queue at Kamakhya can take up to several hours, especially on weekends, Tuesdays, and during festivals. This obviously doesn’t make sense when the day already has three hours of travel from Shillong by road and an onward flight or train.

Kamakhya temple runs a special darshan service for ₹501 per person, which uses a separate and much shorter queue. From 15 June 2026 onwards, the temple stopped the offline counter sale of special darshan tickets and these are now available only through the online portal in advance.

Check with our team if the special darshan ticket cost has been included in the package or is a separate payment. Please provide traveler details well in advance for the booking to be made.

Dress, Footwear and What You Cannot Carry

Dress modestly, with shoulders and legs covered. Footwear is left at the designated point rather than carried up to the entrance. Your footwear will be left in the designated place and not brought into the premises.

No leather, bags, or belt will be permitted into the premises and no photography is allowed within the sanctum.

Entire Nilachal Hill has been a no-tobacco zone from 1st January 2016 onwards. The sale and consumption of tobacco products have been banned in this area.

Ambubachi Mahayog: Check Before You Book June Dates

This is the most important festival of the temple and its inner sanctum is closed to pilgrims for three days during this time. In the year 2026, this period was from 23rd to 25th June and opened again on the morning of 26th June.

Special Darshan was also suspended on the days immediately following the reopening because of the crowds.

The dates are according to the Assamese calendar and change every year. If your visiting dates happen to be in the latter part of June, then check this at enquiry to know how Day 05 would be in that case.

One Thing to Know Before You Go

Animal sacrifice is a part of traditional worship at Kamakhya and happens inside the temple premises. Families that are accompanied by children and vegetarian/vegan travellers can benefit from knowing this prior to visiting and deciding how to navigate the temple complex.

What Changes the Price?

• Group size: The cost of the vehicle is for a group of two people or a group of six, making the per-person share less as the size of the group increases. If you are travelling as a couple, ask what a private booking works out to.
• Travel dates: Availability and costs will differ according to season and holiday periods. Christmas and New Year window and Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival are quoted separately.
• Accommodation: The hotels selected, room type and occupancy will affect the total. It is more important in Sohra than in Shillong because the town has limited stock.
• Vehicle: The vehicle required depends on your group size and agreed arrangements. The fourth day is a long-mileage day regardless of the vehicle used.
• Itinerary changes: Any change in the duration, a Shnongpdeng night, a Mawsynram day or the Nongriat homestay will require a new quotation.

Before comparing prices, ensure that all quotations include the same number of nights, same room occupancy, same meals and same base towns.

A four-night itinerary based only in Shillong is a different trip from one with two nights in Sohra, even where the day headings look similar.

Charges to Check Before You Pay

Ask for a written breakdown covering the Kamakhya Special Darshan fee, entry and camera charges across the Meghalaya sightseeing days, the Dawki boat charge and any guide fee for the Nongriat trek. Most local counters take cash only.

Confirm in the same quote whether travel insurance and room heater charges are included, since these can be billed separately by some hotels in the colder months. Ask whether any tax applies on top of the final package quote.

Permits and Identification for Meghalaya

Indian Travellers

Indian citizens do not need an Inner Line Permit or any other entry permit for a Shillong Cherrapunji Meghalaya Kamakhya package tour from Guwahati. A valid government photo identity document is enough for Shillong, Sohra, Dawki and the rest of the state.

This is different from Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram and Manipur, which do require permits, and the two are often confused in travel content.

Foreign Travellers

Foreign nationals do not need a Protected Area Permit for Meghalaya. Registration with the Foreigners’ Registration Office is required after arrival, and hotels usually assist with this.

Where Identification Is Checked

Carry original documents and photocopies. Shillong Peak sits inside an Indian Air Force station, where the original may be held at the gate; foreign nationals are generally not permitted inside.

Checkposts near Dawki may also ask to see identification. At Kamakhya, carry the original identity document matching your Special Darshan booking.

Keep your original identification, booking voucher and trip contact details together and accessible. Ask which documents are accepted for every traveller, including children. Keep offline copies available, as mobile data is limited on parts of this route.

Best Time for a Meghalaya and Kamakhya Tour

Choosing Your Dates

October and November give the best overall balance on a Shillong Cherrapunji Meghalaya Kamakhya package tour from Guwahati: the waterfalls still carry volume, the Umngot at Dawki is clearing, and skies are more reliable.

March and April are the next best choice, with mild weather and lighter crowds. Late November brings the Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival, which affects both pricing and hotel availability.

Waterfalls or Clear Water at Dawki?

The conditions that make the waterfalls strongest are the ones that reduce river clarity at Dawki. The falls are at their fullest during and just after the monsoon.

The Umngot runs clearest roughly from November to March, when the falls are weaker. You cannot see both at their peak on the same trip, so choose the one that matters more to your group.

Winter: December to February

Winter brings clear skies and the best visibility at Dawki. Shillong nights can drop to around 4 to 6°C, and Sohra feels colder and windier than the figures suggest.

Nohkalikai runs thin through these months and Seven Sisters Falls can be close to dry by February.

Monsoon: June to September

The monsoon brings full waterfalls and dense green landscape, along with heavy rain, cloud, slippery trails and the possibility of road closures. The Umngot runs brown rather than clear. Keep a buffer day if you travel in these months.

This is also the window in which the Ambubachi closure at Kamakhya falls, so June dates need a specific check.

This is a seasonal planning guide, not a weather forecast. Shillong sits at about 1,496 metres and Sohra runs cooler and considerably windier, so one temperature range cannot describe the whole route.

How to Reach Guwahati for Your Tour

By Air

Fly to Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati. Share your flight number, arrival time and passenger details with our team before booking. Day 01 includes a three-hour drive to Shillong, so an arrival before midday allows you to reach Shillong in daylight.

By Train

Guwahati has more than one railway station, and Guwahati and Kamakhya Junction are separate stations several kilometres apart. Send the exact station name shown on your ticket, along with the train number and arrival time, and confirm the pickup point in your booking details.

By Road

If you are already in Guwahati or arriving by road, agree a meeting point and time before the tour starts. The return drop is also in Guwahati, after the Kamakhya visit on Day 05. Your onward travel needs to allow for the drive down from Shillong and time at the temple.

Road Travel on This Route

These rounded figures are route references, not full sightseeing-day timings. Stops, checkposts, traffic and weather add time, and monsoon conditions can add considerably more.

Day 04 combines several of these legs into one long day. Confirm the Day 05 departure time from Shillong in your final schedule.

Places You’ll Visit

Kamakhya Temple: The Day 05 Visit

On Nilachal Hill in western Guwahati, among the 51 Shakti Peethas and the focus of the final morning of the tour. Allow proper time for the approach, footwear arrangements and the queue rather than treating it as a stop between the drive and the airport.

Umiam Lake and Shillong

Umiam, also called Barapani, is a reservoir ringed by pine hills north of Shillong, seen from the highway viewpoint on Day 01. In Shillong itself the itinerary passes Ward’s Lake and Police Bazaar, with Elephant Falls and Shillong Peak on the Day 02 morning.

Shillong Peak is inside an Air Force station and has its own entry conditions.

Sohra: Waterfalls and Caves

Sohra, still widely known as Cherrapunji, is the base for two nights. Nohkalikai Falls, at 340 metres, is the tallest plunge waterfall in India and is viewed from platforms rather than approached. Seven Sisters Falls is strongly seasonal.

The limestone caves at Mawsmai and Arwah are both walkable, and the itinerary covers one of them depending on time.

Nongriat: The Double Decker Living Root Bridge

Two tiers of trained Ficus elastica roots over a stream, reached on foot from Tyrna.

Meghalaya’s living root bridges have been on India’s UNESCO Tentative List since 2022, and India submitted the formal nomination dossier, titled Jingkieng Jri / Lyu Chrai Cultural Landscape, in January 2026 for the 2026–27 evaluation cycle. They are nominated and under evaluation, not inscribed. A number of travel pages state otherwise.

Mawlynnong, Riwai and Dawki

Mawlynnong was described as the cleanest village in Asia by Discover India in 2003 and enforces a strict plastic policy. The Riwai Single Decker Root Bridge is a short walk from the road nearby and is the accessible alternative to Nongriat.

Dawki sits on the Umngot river at the Bangladesh border; Shnongpdeng, upstream, is quieter and is where most water activities operate.

If the Umngot is the main reason you are travelling, our Shillong, Cherrapunji, Mawlynnong and Dawki itinerary gives the river more time than a single afternoon.

Available as Add-Ons, Not Included

Mawsynram, Laitlum Canyon, Rainbow Falls beyond Nongriat, a Nongriat homestay and the Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Cultures are not part of this itinerary.

Thangkharang Park, Dainthlen Falls and Eco Park are also outside the scheduled stops. Ask if you want any of these built in, and we will quote the revised plan rather than adding them to an already full day.

Local Culture, Food and Etiquette

Meghalaya is not a place you pass through neutrally. The Khasi are one of the largest surviving matrilineal societies in the world: children take the mother’s surname, and property passes to the youngest daughter, who carries responsibility for the parents and the family’s traditional obligations.

This shapes everything from household structure to how the markets work.

Ask before photographing people, particularly at Mawlynnong and in the villages around Nongriat, which are homes rather than exhibits.

Meghalaya is predominantly Christian and Sunday is observed seriously, so many shops, restaurants and some attractions close or run reduced hours. Mawlynnong and several other villages enforce a plastic ban; carry a refillable bottle and take your waste out with you.

At Kamakhya, follow the instructions given on footwear, dress and photography.

Khasi cuisine is heavily pork-based. Jadoh, rice cooked with meat, is the signature dish, alongside dohneiiong, pork with black sesame, and tungrymbai, fermented soybean.

Shillong has plenty of vegetarian options including dedicated restaurants; Sohra has far fewer, and Nongriat has almost none. Tell us about vegetarian meals, allergies or other dietary needs when requesting your quote so hotels can be briefed in advance.

Breakfast is included; confirm any additional meal arrangements and charges in writing.

Practical Notes: The Trek, Cash, Network and Packing

The Nongriat Trek on Day 03

The descent to Nongriat is roughly 3,000 steps each way from Tyrna, and the return trek takes about six to seven hours including time at the bridge and the natural pool. The route is steep and often wet, and the climb back out is harder than the way down.

It is not suitable for travellers with knee, hip, cardiac, respiratory or mobility difficulties. Rainbow Falls adds about three hours beyond Nongriat and needs an earlier start.

If anyone in your group should not attempt the trek, tell us at booking and we will plan the day around the easier Riwai root bridge instead. We would rather rebuild the day in advance than have you find out at the trailhead.

Cash and Connectivity

ATMs are reliable in Shillong, thin and often out of service in Sohra, and absent at Nongriat, Mawlynnong and Shnongpdeng. Most entry counters, boats and village fees are cash only, so withdraw in Shillong and carry small notes.

BSNL and Jio have the best mobile coverage in Meghalaya, Airtel is workable and Vi is patchy. There is effectively no signal at Nongriat, because the gorge blocks it, and coverage is intermittent on the Dawki and Mawlynnong roads.

Tell people at home you may be out of contact for part of Day 03.

What to Pack

• A light waterproof jacket and a dry bag for electronics, in any month.
• Walking shoes with proper grip for the steps at Nongriat, the caves and the wet platforms at the falls.
• Warm layers for Shillong and Sohra nights between November and February.
• Modest clothing for the Kamakhya visit, with shoulders and legs covered.
• A torch for the caves, sunscreen, a refillable bottle, insect repellent and any regular medication.

Before You Leave Each Hotel

Check the next morning’s departure time with your driver or coordinator. This matters most before the Day 03 trek, before the long Day 04 drive and before the Day 05 departure for Kamakhya, where a late start affects the temple visit and everything after it.

Anyone with significant knee, hip, cardiac or respiratory difficulty who still wants to attempt Day 03 should discuss it with us first. Travellers who dislike enclosed spaces should skip the caves, which is easy to arrange.

Anyone booked on an early afternoon departure from Guwahati should look at the Meghalaya-only package instead, because Day 05 needs the morning and part of the afternoon.
