Bagdogra Airport to Bhutan Border: The Road Route
The border entry points are located at Jaigaon on the Indian side, and Phuentsholing on the Bhutan side. They're basically one town separated by a gate.
The road route begins at Bagdogra Airport and travels through Siliguri, Sevoke, Malbazar and Hasimara and finally to Jaigaon, which is 155 km away. So plan four to four and a half hours instead of three because the Dooars stretch is slower than the distance.
Bagdogra to Bhutan Border Distance by Road
No other option but to travel via road. Road will be our mode of transportation from Bagdogra to the border and it is the route our package follows on Day 01.
The road journey is among the most enjoyable ones of the tour, passing through tea gardens and the peripheries of the Dooars forest belt.

Bagdogra to Paro Distance
Two very different answers depending on the mode of transportation.
By road: the direct Bagdogra-Phuentsholing-Paro route is roughly 300 to 320 km, depending on the road used. Our 7N/8D Bhutan tour from Bagdogra does not go straight to Paro; we arrive there on Day 05 after Thimphu and Punakha.
By air: Drukair has a seasonal Bagdogra to Paro sector and the duration of flight is well less than an hour. It does not operate all year round, and there are few seats available, so do tell us to check on the availability of seats on your date before you take it as an option.
Bagdogra to Bhutan Distance by Train
There is no railway into Bhutan. The train can take you only as far as the Indian side as there is no passenger rail network in the country.

Bhutan Itinerary from Bagdogra: Day by Day
Picked up from Bagdogra and traveled about 155 km on the mountain route through Dooars tea estates to the border, around four hours. Check in at either Phuentsholing or Jaigaon depending upon permit times and hotel availability.
Evenings free. Starting here instead of pressing on to Thimphu is deliberate: the mountain road is not one to drive tired.

Permit processing and then onwards to Bhutan. About 155 km and five to six hours, through Gedu and past the Chukha hydropower project on the Wang. Stop at Chuzom, the meeting point of Thimphu Chhu and Paro Chhu. Arrive Thimphu in the afternoon.

Buddha Dordenma at Kuensel Phodrang, National Memorial Chorten, Changangkha Lhakhang, Takin Preserve, National Library, Painting School and Textile Museum.
There is one timing note which you need to consider: Tashichho Dzong is the administrative headquarter, but visitors can visit it only after office hours on working days, around 5 PM onwards. On weekends and public holidays it is open for the whole day for visitors.

Around 77 km, 3 hours drive with stops through Dochu La Pass and its 108 chortens. Visit Punakha Dzong at the meeting point of Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu river and then Chimi Lhakhang and Suspension Bridge. The altitude of Punakha is around 1,200 meters and it is comparatively warmer than Thimphu.

About 115 km back over Dochu La, allow four hours with stops. In Paro visit the National Museum in the old watchtower, Rinpung Dzong built in 1646, the Nya Mey Zam bridge, and the airport viewpoint. An easier day in consideration of what comes next.

The climb most people come for. The monastery is at about 3,120 meters, around 900 meters above the Paro valley floor. The trip to and fro will take about four to six hours including the visit.
Horses can take you only till the halfway cafeteria, and do not come back down, so everyone walks the descent. Your luggage, cell phones and cameras need to be kept in a locker at the entrance. Proper clothing, early start. A hot-stone bath afterwards on a direct payment basis.

From Paro up to Chele La at around 3,988 m, the highest motorable pass in Bhutan, where you can see across to Jomolhari on a clear day. Then it’s a downhill journey to Phuentsholing.
This is a long drive day, so early start is essential. Snow could make the road impassable through Chele La during winter; know what your alternative will be if you are traveling during those months.

What the Price Covers
Your Bhutan tour from Bagdogra covers seven nights, breakfast and dinner every day, SDF for all seven nights, permits, licensed guide, Bagdogra pick up & drop and all transport inside Bhutan, and travel insurance to age 60.
Cost does not include air or train tickets to Bagdogra, monument entry tickets, lunch and personal costs.
What Changes the Price
- Group size: This cost is based on 6 persons per group. Vehicle & guide cost is the same for 2, so smaller groups carry a higher share.
- Season: March-May and September-November are high seasons.
- Hotels: This cost is based on 3-star hotels. Others are quoted on request.
- Age: Travel insurance covers up to 60, above that a supplement applies.
Two Fixed Costs and One New One
SDF is non-discountable: Indians have to pay ₹1,200 per head per night, with discounts of 50% for children from 6 to 12 years and none for children less than 6 years of age. If any competing offer seems absurdly cheap, it means that this cost has not been included.
5% GST was introduced in Bhutan from 1 January 2026, which includes tourism services like hotels, guides, transportation and food. SDF is exempt from GST. You can ask about this while issuing your bill.

Get a written breakdown of the entry charges for the monument at Thimphu, Punakha, and Paro. These are charged separately at each site and can add a significant amount to the total trip cost.
Clarify how the 5% Bhutan GST appears in your statement, along with the insurance supplement if you have anybody in your group aged 60 years or above.
Two Booking Conditions Worth Knowing
Rooms are not held at the time of enquiry: Room availability is verified at the time of booking. In case the hotel is unavailable, an alternative of the same category is provided. Get the hotel names in writing once your booking is done.
The published rate is valid for Indian Nationals: If you have anybody with foreign passports traveling in the same group, you should quote them separately as the rules of SDF and visa differ. Let us know if this applies in your case.
Permits and Documents
No Visa, But an Entry Permit Is Required
Indian passport holders on a Bhutan tour from Bagdogra do not require a visa, but they do require a Bhutan entry permit. A separate Route Permit is generally no longer required for tourist travel around Bhutan when accompanied by a Department of Tourism-certified guide. Some restricted areas and National Parks can have separate permit requirements.
Accepted Documents
A valid Indian passport having a minimum of six months validity or a Voters ID card issued by the Election Commission. Two passport-sized photographs.
Aadhar card, PAN card and driving license are not acceptable. This is the most frequent reason that Indians return from Phuentsholing. It is best if you check the documents held by everybody in your group before booking your flight to Bagdogra.
Children below the age of 18 without a passport require an original Birth Certificate.
Money
Indian currency is accepted in notes up to ₹500 denomination, with a maximum of ₹25,000 per individual. Above that, denominations must be ₹100 or lower. The Ngultrum is pegged one-to-one with the rupee.
Best Time to Visit Bhutan
Spring, March to May: Rhododendrons, clear views, the Paro Tshechu. Peak pricing.
Autumn, September to November: The most reliable skies of the year and the Thimphu Tshechu. The best overall window and the one to book earliest.
Winter, December to February: Cold at altitude, quiet, best rates. Chele La can close with snow. The black-necked cranes are in Phobjikha, which is a real reason to travel then.
Monsoon, June to August: Green and cheap, with genuine landslide and road-closure risk on exactly the roads this itinerary uses. Keep a buffer day.

Places You'll Visit
Phuentsholing: The border town, at about 300 metres. Warm, busy, and the site of your permit formalities. Kharbandi Goemba sits above the town with views back over the plains.
Thimphu: The capital, at about 2,320 metres, and the only one in the world without traffic lights. Buddha Dordenma at 51.5 metres, the Memorial Chorten, the Takin preserve and Tashichho Dzong, subject to the visiting-hours note above.
Punakha: The old capital, at about 1,200 metres. Punakha Dzong is the coronation venue for every Bhutanese king and the winter seat of the central monastic body.
Paro: Rinpung Dzong, the National Museum, Taktsang on the cliff above the valley, and Chele La on the ridge towards Haa.
Not on This Itinerary
Bumthang, Haa Valley, Trongsa, Wangdue Phodrang and Phobjikha are not included in the seven nights of this Bhutan package tour from Bagdogra. They appear on a lot of Bhutan pages as though they were. If you want Phobjikha for the cranes, or Bumthang for the temples, ask and we will quote the longer trip rather than pretending they fit.
Bhutanese Culture, Food and Etiquette
Crossing a Real Border
Phuentsholing is worth a moment of attention rather than being treated as a formality. The gate divides Jaigaon from Phuentsholing, and the change on the other side is immediate: different architecture, different signage, different pace.
It is one of the more striking land borders in the region, and the reason the overland route feels like arriving somewhere rather than landing in it.
Dress and Conduct
Dzongs and monasteries require covered shoulders and long trousers. Hats come off inside. There is no photography inside temple buildings, though courtyards are usually fine.
Walk clockwise around chortens and prayer wheels. Drones need prior permission and are routinely confiscated without it.
Food
Bhutanese cooking is chilli-and-cheese forward, with the chilli treated as a vegetable rather than a seasoning. Ema datshi, chillies with cheese, is the national dish and is vegetarian. Kewa datshi with potato and shamu datshi with mushroom are milder. Red rice and buckwheat are staples.
Phuentsholing, being a border town, has the widest food choice on the whole itinerary, including plenty of Indian options. It thins out considerably once you are up in Punakha.

Festivals and Archery
Tshechus are masked dance festivals held at dzongs throughout the year, the Paro and Thimphu ones being the largest.
Archery is the national sport and is played competitively in most towns, usually with a good deal of singing and heckling. If your guide offers to stop at a match, take it.

You gain roughly two thousand metres on Day 02 alone, which is a real change. Drink water, take the first evening in Thimphu slowly, and tell your guide if anyone is struggling.
Connectivity and Cash
Indian SIMs work only on international roaming and it is expensive. Local B-Mobile or TashiCell SIMs are available in Phuentsholing, which is your first stop, so buy one there rather than waiting. ATMs are reliable in Thimphu and Paro and thin elsewhere.

Layers in every month, proper walking shoes for Taktsang, sunscreen at altitude, and a warm layer for Chele La regardless of season.

The Bagdogra Bhutan overland route is the natural itinerary if Bagdogra is your entry point, and it is usually cheaper than flying into Paro, because you are buying a domestic ticket rather than an international one.
