Day-by-Day Itinerary
Pick up from Guwahati airport or railway station and drive to Shillong via NH-6. The viewpoint of the highway at Umiam Lake is a good stop: boating and water sports are available here for an extra charge.
Check in as early as mid-afternoon. If time permits, visit Ward's Lake and Police Bazaar before dinner. Most Shillong kitchens are closed around 9:00 PM.

Leave after breakfast by 8:30 AM. Visit Elephant Falls and then, if conditions permit, visit Shillong Peak. The peak is located within an Indian Air Force station, make sure to bring the original photo ID.
A local taxi transfer is required. Foreign nationals are not usually allowed to enter the station. From here proceed along Mawkdok Dympep Valley Viewpoint to Sohra for lunch.
Visit Nohkalikai Falls in the afternoon and either Arwah Cave or Mawsmai Cave, depending on time and weather, and then visit Seven Sisters Falls.

After an early breakfast, drive 30 minutes to Tyrna and trek roughly 3,000 steps to Nongriat's Double Decker Living Root Bridge. Include 6-7 hours for the return hike including time at the bridge and natural pool.
This is an extremely steep and sometimes wet track that is not suitable for people with knee, hip, heart, breathing or mobility problems. Rainbow Falls takes approximately 3 hours and early start.
Inform us if anyone requires the easier Riwai root bridge alternative, in advance.

Depart Sohra at 7:30 AM for Umngot River, Riwai and Mawlynnong. Walk through Mawlynnong, stop at the Balancing Rock then take the short path to Single Decker Root Bridge, Riwai. Then head to Dawki or a quieter Shnongpdeng for boating and other activities before heading back to Shillong.
This is the longest day, with about seven hours of driving. Carry photo ID for border checkposts. River clarity is best from November to March and cannot be guaranteed during or just after the monsoon.

What Moves the Price
Group size: This is by far the most important factor. The cost of the vehicle is the same for two or six people to travel, meaning that the couple has to pay significantly more for themselves than the family of six does. If travelling in a pair, inquire of “join-in” departures.
Season: The months of October-November and March-April are considered peak seasons. Christmas-New Year window and the November Cherry Blossom Festival week are sold separately. June to September is low season and significantly cheaper, but with the caveats below in the "Timing" section.
Hotel category: Hotel Category: In Shillong, the premium and deluxe category differ, but it is not very significant. It's more important in Sohra, where there is limited stock and at the lower end, heating, hot water and reliable power are not common.

Do You Need a Permit for Meghalaya?
The permit rules for a Shillong Meghalaya package tour from Guwahati are simple, but Indian and foreign travelers have different needs.
Indian Travellers
Indian citizens are not required to obtain Inner Line Permit or any other entry permit to enter Meghalaya. Shillong, Sohra, Dawki and the rest of the state require only a valid government photo ID card like Aadhaar, Voter ID, a passport or a driving licence.
Foreign Travellers
Foreign nationals do not need a Protected Area Permit. Registration with the Foreigners' Registration Office, however, must be done within 24 hours of arrival. Hotels typically can assist with this. State your nationality when asking, to verify that the existing requirements are in place.
Where Photo ID Is Required
Carry the original ID and photocopies. Shillong Peak may have the original at the Air Force station gate and the checkposts around Dawki may request to see it. Foreign nationals are not permitted to enter the Shillong Peak Air Force Station.
Best Time to Visit Shillong and Meghalaya
Best Months Overall
October to November offers the best waterfall flow, clearer skies and improving Dawki visibility. Next best period is between March and April, with moderate temperatures, lesser crowds and some pre-monsoon rainfalls.
Cherry blossom festival in Shillong is held in late November and Shad Suk Mynsiem in late April. May is a less consistent month.
Waterfalls or Clear Dawki Water?
The waterfalls are strongest during and immediately after the monsoon. The Umngot River is clearest from about November to March when the falls are less intense. It is impossible to view both at peak on a single Shillong Meghalaya package tour from Guwahati.
Winter: December to February
The Dawki visibility is best in winter when the sky is clear. The nights in Shillong can drop to 4-6°C, and Sohra is colder and windier. Nohkalikai runs thin and Seven Sisters Falls could be almost dry by February.
Monsoon: June to September
While Monsoon provides full waterfalls, lush scenery, it also means heavy rain, cloudy views, slippery trails, leeches and potential road closures. Water at Dawki is brown and not clear. Keep a buffer day.

How to Reach Shillong from Guwahati
The airport at Umroi near Shillong does not have many flights, so you need to travel from Guwahati for this package.
By Air
Fly to Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU) in Guwahati. This airport is located about 20 km west of the city and approximately 3.5 hours away from Shillong. Arrive in Guwahati before noon on Day 01 of your Shillong Meghalaya package tour from Guwahati so that you reach Shillong before nightfall.
By Train
Use Guwahati Railway Station (GHY) or Kamakhya Junction (KYQ). They are independent stations and 6-7 km apart, please check the correct pickup point. There is no railway station at Shillong, and further travel will be by road.
By Road
NH-6 runs between Guwahati and Shillong covering approximately 100 km. This drive takes about 3 to 3.5 hours with a stop, depending on the monsoon weather and traffic on Friday. Shared taxis and buses leave from Paltan Bazaar; this package uses a private vehicle.

Umiam Lake (Barapani): A reservoir formed by damming the Umiam river in the 1960s, ringed by pine hills 15 km north of Shillong. Highway viewpoint on Day 01; boating and water sports from the complex on the far shore, charged separately.
Elephant Falls: A three-tier fall in Upper Shillong reached by stepped walkways. Named by the British for a rock at the base that the 1897 earthquake destroyed.
Shillong Peak: 1,965 m, the highest point in the area, inside an Indian Air Force station. Photo ID mandatory, separate ticket, shuttle taxi, afternoon cut-off, restricted for foreign nationals.
Mawkdok Dympep Valley Viewpoint: Where the Shillong plateau drops into a gorge, on the Sohra road. Zipline operated separately.

Double Decker Living Root Bridge, Nongriat: Two tiers of trained Ficus elastica roots over the Umshiang stream. It takes roughly 3,000 steps to reach from Tyrna. It has been on UNESCO's Tentative List since 2022, with a formal nomination submitted in January 2026.
Mawlynnong: Called the cleanest village in Asia by Discover India in 2003. Bamboo skywalk, strict plastic policy, and the Balancing Rock just outside.
Riwai Single Decker Root Bridge: The accessible root bridge, a ten-minute walk from the road near Mawlynnong.
Dawki and Shnongpdeng: The Umngot river on the Bangladesh border. Famously transparent in the dry season. Shnongpdeng, 8 km upstream, is quieter and is where kayaking, snorkeling and cliff jumping operate.
Police Bazaar: Shillong's commercial centre. Khasi shawls, cane and bamboo work, local tea, and the best street food in the city.
Ward's Lake: A small landscaped lake in central Shillong with a wooden footbridge and botanical garden.
Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Cultures: Seven floors covering the indigenous cultures of all eight Northeast states, with a rooftop skywalk. The best museum in the region.

Kamakhya Temple, Guwahati: One of the most significant Shakti Peethas in India, on Nilachal Hill in Guwahati. It is in Assam, not Meghalaya, and it is not part of this itinerary.

Khasi Culture and Local Etiquette
Meghalaya is not a place you pass through neutrally, and a few things are worth knowing before your Shillong Meghalaya package tour from Guwahati.
- The Khasi are matrilineal: Children take the mother's surname, and property traditionally passes to the youngest daughter, the Ka Khadduh. She is responsible for the parents and the family's traditional obligations. This system shapes everything from household structure to how markets work.
- Ask before photographing people: This matters especially at Mawlynnong and in the villages around Nongriat, which are homes rather than exhibits. Most people will say yes. Being asked is the point.
- Sunday is quiet: Meghalaya is predominantly Christian and Sunday is observed seriously as many shops, restaurants and some attractions close or run reduced hours. Plan Day 05 accordingly if it falls on a Sunday.
- The plastic rules are real: Mawlynnong and several villages enforce a plastic ban. Carry a refillable bottle and take your waste out with you.
- Food to look for: jadoh, rice cooked with pork or chicken and blood, which is the signature Khasi dish; dohneiiong, pork with black sesame; putharo and pukhlein, rice cakes; tungrymbai, fermented soybean. Police Bazaar and Bara Bazaar in Shillong are where to try them.
- Vegetarian travellers: Khasi cuisine is heavily pork-based, but Shillong has plenty of vegetarian options including several dedicated restaurants. Sohra has far fewer, and Nongriat has almost none beyond noodles and eggs. Tell us at booking and we will brief the hotels in advance rather than leaving you to negotiate it at 8 PM in Sohra.
Practical Notes — Cash, Network, Packing
- Cash: ATMs are reliable in Shillong, thin and often out of service in Sohra, and absent at Nongriat, Mawlynnong and Shnongpdeng. Most entry counters, boats and village fees are cash-only. Withdraw in Shillong and carry small notes.
- Mobile network: BSNL and Jio have the best coverage in Meghalaya, Airtel is workable, Vi is patchy. There is effectively no signal at Nongriat, the gorge blocks it and coverage is intermittent on the Dawki and Mawlynnong roads. Tell people at home you will be out of contact for part of Day 03.
- Rain gear, every month: This is the wettest region on earth and a clear morning means nothing. Carry a light waterproof jacket and a dry bag for electronics regardless of season.
- Footwear: Grippy shoes with proper tread, not fashion sneakers. The steps at Nongriat, the caves and the falls platforms are all wet and slick even in dry months.
- Layers: Shillong at 1,496 m and Sohra higher and windier get genuinely cold at night from November to February. Days can still be warm. Layers work better than one heavy jacket.
- Also carry: insect repellent and salt for leeches if you trek in monsoon, a torch for the caves, sunscreen, a refillable water bottle, and any regular medication. Pharmacies are good in Shillong and limited elsewhere.
- Things close early: Kitchens in Shillong stop around 9 PM and in Sohra considerably earlier. Do not plan late dinners.
Who This Tour Suits
- Good for: couples and honeymooners; families with children aged roughly 8 and up; groups of friends; first-time visitors to the Northeast; photographers; anyone who wants waterfalls, caves and living culture in one compact circuit.
- Manageable with planning: families with younger children and travellers in their 60s and 70s, provided the Nongriat trek is swapped for the Riwai alternative. The rest of the itinerary is vehicle-based with short walks and is well within reach.
- Think carefully before booking: anyone with significant knee, hip, cardiac or respiratory issues who still wants to attempt Day 03. Claustrophobic travellers should skip the caves, which is easy to arrange. Anyone who cannot manage a 7-hour driving day should look at the 5N/6D version instead of this one.
- Solo travellers: the route is safe and routinely travelled solo, including by women. The practical constraint is cost, since a single traveller carries the full vehicle charge. Ask about join-in departures.
- Not ideal for: anyone on a fixed schedule with no slack in monsoon season, and anyone expecting both full waterfalls and a transparent Dawki on the same trip. Pick which one matters more and we will tell you honestly when to come.

No. Meghalaya has no ILP system for Indian nationals, a government photo ID is all you need. This differs from neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram and Manipur, which do require permits, and a lot of travel content confuses the two. Foreign nationals need no PAP either, only registration with the Foreigners' Registration Office in Shillong within 24 hours.

October and November are the best overall for a Shillong Meghalaya package tour from Guwahati. The falls still carry volume, the Umngot is clearing, and skies are reliable. March–April is the second choice. December–February is best if Dawki's clear water is your priority, and worst for waterfalls. June–September is peak monsoon, with spectacular falls, a brown river and possible road closures.
