Due to its proximity to international borders and sensitive tribal areas, several states in Northeast India require permits for both domestic and international tourists for North east tour packages from Surat. This guide aims to provide you with essential information about the permits required for traveling to various destinations in Northeast India.
Protected Area Permits (PAP) and Inner Line Permits (ILP):
Several states in Northeast India, including Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, and parts of Sikkim, require visitors to obtain Protected Area Permits (PAP) or Inner Line Permits (ILP) to enter certain restricted or protected areas. These permits are issued by the respective state governments and are necessary for both Indian and foreign nationals. PAP and ILP are aimed at regulating tourist movement and ensuring the safety and security of visitors and locals alike.
Arunachal Pradesh:
Arunachal Pradesh, often referred to as the "Land of the Dawn-Lit Mountains," requires both domestic and foreign tourists to obtain Inner Line Permits (ILP) to enter the state. These permits are issued by the Arunachal Pradesh government and can be obtained online or from designated offices in select cities. The ILP allows travelers to explore various destinations within Arunachal Pradesh, including Tawang, Ziro, and Mechuka.
Nagaland:
Nagaland, known for its vibrant tribal culture and festivals, also requires visitors to obtain Inner Line Permits (ILP) for entry. The ILP is necessary for exploring popular tourist destinations such as Kohima, Dimapur, and the picturesque Dzukou Valley. Travelers can apply for ILP online or at designated government offices in Nagaland or other states.
Mizoram:
Mizoram, with its lush green hills and diverse tribal communities, mandates Inner Line Permits (ILP) for tourists entering the state. The ILP allows travelers to visit attractions like Aizawl, the capital city, and the serene hill station of Lunglei. ILP for Mizoram can be obtained online or from designated authorities in the state.
Sikkim:
Parts of Sikkim also require permits for entry, particularly areas close to the international border with Tibet. The permit, known as the Protected Area Permit (PAP), is required for visiting certain regions like North Sikkim, including Gurudongmar Lake and Yumthang Valley. PAP for Sikkim can be obtained through registered tour operators or directly from the authorities in Gangtok.
Guwahati (Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport): The largest and busiest airport in North East India. It serves as a major gateway to Assam and neighboring states. Imphal (Imphal International Airport): Connects to Manipur and offers flights from major cities like Kolkata and Delhi.
Agartala the main airport for Tripura, with flights connecting to major cities. Shillong airport is about 30 km from Shillong city, with connections mainly through Guwahati. To reach North east by road:
Take National Highway 6 (NH 6) from Guwahati towards Shillong. The route passes through picturesque areas, including Umiam Lake.. You would need to take multiple buses, change routes, and cross several state borders. It's not a common or recommended mode of transportation due to the time and effort it entails.
It is recommended to plan your North east tour packages from Surat for family in advance and book your flights and permits well in advance to avoid any last-minute hassles.
