Mumbai to Bhutan Tour Package Itinerary: Day by Day
Arrive at Paro and meet your guide, then drive to Thimphu about 65 km or an hour and a half. Paro is at an altitude of about 2,235 metres and Thimphu at 2,320 metres; take it easy on your first day there. If your connecting flight reaches Paro in the late morning, Day 01 of your Bhutan package tour from Mumbai will be considered a half day.

Visit the Buddha Dordenma at Kuensel Phodrang, National Memorial Chorten, Changangkha Lhakhang, Takin preserve, National Library, and painting school.
One timing problem that spoils many days in Thimphu: tourists have limited access to Tashichho Dzong, the seat of government, which is open normally after 5 PM on weekdays but is open throughout the day on weekends and public holidays.

Around 77 km and 3 hours, including stops over Dochu La pass and its 108 chortens. In Punakha, visit the dzong where the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu meet and Chimi Lhakhang and suspension bridge.
Punakha is located at an altitude of around 1,200 m, and the climate is a little warmer than that of Thimphu. Therefore, pack slightly lighter clothing for this night.

Phobjikha is roughly three hours each way from Punakha. Gangtey Goemba, nature walk down to Semchubara, and the Black-Necked Crane Information Centre, where these cranes are found during winter only.

Approximately 115 km going back via Dochu La will take four hours with stops. In Paro, there’s the National Museum located in the ancient watchtower and Rinpung Dzong, which was built in 1646. An easier day, which is important because of what's coming next.

The climb that makes people visit Bhutan. The monastery is situated at an altitude of 3,120 meters, around 900 meters above the Paro valley floor. Walking up and down takes from four to six hours and includes the time spent inside.
Horses can take people only up to the half way cafeteria and do not come back down, so everyone walks the descent. Items such as bags, cellphones, and cameras are stored in lockers at the entrance. Long trousers and covered shoulders. Start early.

A day's trip to Chele La, the highest motorable pass in the country (approx. 3988 metres) with a clear day view of Jomolhari. In winter the pass may be closed, so inquire what the alternative is if your dates coincide with this time of year.

What the INR 39,500/- Does and Does Not Cover
It covers your seven nights, including breakfast and dinner each day, SDF for all nights, all permits, a registered guide, private transport for the entire circuit and travel insurance to age 60.
It doesn’t cover your flight cost, which is a significant one for you since you’re flying from Mumbai and that involves two sectors. One between Mumbai and your connecting city and another from your connecting city to Paro. Monument entrance fees, lunch and personal expenses are also outside.
Airfare is not published here, because it varies with the dates, the route and time of booking. Request the package and the fare at the time when you are planning your total.
If it's the air ticket the main problem, then overland travel is another alternative. Our Bhutan tour from Bagdogra involves traveling to Bhutan via road from the Indian side, therefore, instead of buying an international flight to Paro, a domestic flight to Bagdogra is purchased. In exchange, it's four long days of driving.
What Changes the Price
- Group size: The cost to two travellers is the same as to six travellers; smaller groups will pay more per-person than larger groups.
- Season: The best time to stay for both hotels and flights is March to May and September to November.
- Hotel category: The listed rate is 3-star. Other categories are quoted on request.
- Your route from Mumbai. There is a difference in fares and on the day on which you arrive from Delhi and via Kolkata.
- Age: Travel insurance is included to age 60; above that a supplement applies.
Two Costs That Are Fixed, and One That Is New
SDF is an essential cost and cannot be ignored. The price of SDF per person per night is ₹1,200 for Indian nationals. Children aged 6 to under 12 pay half, and under-6s are exempt. No travel operator can offer you a lower one. If another quote appears too low for the same nights, this is typically the part they've left out.
A 5% GST which was introduced in Bhutan from 1 January 2026 affects the tourism industry in Bhutan, including hotels, tours and guides, transport, and food, but not the SDF. Make sure you ask about it in advance.
Bhutan is one of the cheaper vacation countries for Indians traveling overseas from India. There is no need for you to have any visa or currency exchange arranged beforehand. But the SDF is a real per-night cost, so compare on the total rather than the headline when you are pricing a Bhutan package tour from Mumbai.

Request a written list of monument entry charges from Thimphu, Punakha, and Paro, which are paid at each site and are applicable over a period of seven nights.
This goes for the Taktsang horse rental on Day 06 and hot-stone bath charge in case any of your group members opt for the facilities.

How to Reach Bhutan from Mumbai
Bhutan Tour Packages with Flight: What Is Actually Available
There are no direct flights between Mumbai and Paro. Paro is served by five Indian cities including Delhi, Kolkata, Bagdogra, Guwahati and Gaya. Drukair and Bhutan Airlines are the airlines involved. All Mumbai based travelers do the connecting flight.
Via Delhi
The Mumbai-Delhi air travel is the busiest route in India while Delhi-Paro flight operates frequently on Drukair and even on Bhutan Airlines. Ideal route for re-schedule flexibility in case of any slip up.
Via Kolkata
Kolkata to Paro is the shorter hop at about an hour and ten minutes, and it runs close to daily across both carriers. Often the better arrival time into Paro.
Which to choose
It depends upon your dates and arrival time in Paro as Day 01 involves a drive to Thimphu. Share your travel dates with us and we will advise you which is the ideal route for your Bhutan package tour from Mumbai.
Mumbai to Bhutan by Road
There is also an overland route from Mumbai to Bagdogra and then to the Phuentsholing border, which is a distance of 165 km and takes four and a half to five hours.
The Phuentsholing-Thimphu distance is 176 km, but takes six to seven hours of mountain driving, as compared to the four and a half claimed in several pages.

The Paro Weather Point
Paro lies in a bowl of mountains and has only visual flights; therefore, it has limited certified pilots. In addition, the flights are day time only and weather dependent.
You should plan for one buffer night in Delhi or Kolkata on your return journey. This one paragraph alone will save more Mumbai travellers more money than all other tips on this page.

These are realistic figures including stops and road conditions, not best-case. Bhutan's mountain roads do not reward optimistic scheduling.
Permits and Entry for Indian Travellers
No Visa, But an Entry Permit
Indian nationals do not need a visa for Bhutan, but you do need an entry permit. A separate route permit is no longer required for tourists travelling with a Department of Tourism-certified guide, including on routes that cover Punakha and Phobjikha. Accepted Documents for Indian Travellers
A valid Indian passport with at least six months' validity, or an original Voter ID card issued by the Election Commission. Carry recent passport-size photographs.
Aadhaar Is Not Accepted
Neither is PAN or a driving licence. This is the single most common reason Indian travellers are turned back at the Bhutan border, and it is worth checking what every person in your group is carrying before you book flights.
Children Under 18
A child travelling without a passport needs an original birth certificate. Very few pages mention this and families do get stopped over it.
Money
Indian currency is accepted in notes up to ₹500 denomination, with a limit of ₹25,000 per person. Above that, denominations must be ₹100 or lower. The Ngultrum is pegged one-to-one with the rupee.
Foreign Nationals Travelling With You
A foreign passport holder in an otherwise Indian group pays USD 100 per night SDF plus a USD 40 visa fee, on a different process. Tell us at enquiry if this applies to anyone in your party.
Best Time to Visit Bhutan from Mumbai
Spring, March to May: Rhododendrons, clear mountain views and the Paro Tshechu. Peak pricing and the busiest hotels.
Autumn, September to November: The most reliable skies of the year and the Thimphu Tshechu. The best overall window, and the one to book earliest.
Winter, December to February: Cold at altitude, quiet, and the best rates. Chele La can close with snow, and this is when the black-necked cranes are in Phobjikha, which is a genuine reason to travel in winter rather than a consolation.
Monsoon, June to August: Green valleys, low prices, and real disruption risk on both the roads and the Paro flights. Keep a buffer day.

Festival Dates Move
Tshechu dates follow the Bhutanese lunar calendar and shift every year. If a festival is the reason you are travelling, confirm the date for your year before booking flights, and book hotels early because festival weeks sell out.
Places You'll Visit
Thimphu
The capital, and the only one in the world without traffic lights. The Buddha Dordenma at 51.5 metres, the National Memorial Chorten, the Takin preserve for Bhutan's national animal, the painting school and the textile museum. Tashichho Dzong, subject to the visiting-hours note above.
Punakha
The old capital, at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu. Punakha Dzong is the coronation venue for every Bhutanese king and the winter seat of the central monastic body. Chimi Lhakhang and the suspension bridge are short walks from the road.
Phobjikha and Gangtey
A glacial valley at around 3,000 metres, and the wintering ground of the black-necked cranes. Gangtey Goemba is one of the oldest Nyingma monasteries in the country.
Paro
Rinpung Dzong, the National Museum in the old watchtower, Taktsang above the valley, and Chele La on the ridge towards Haa.
Not on This Itinerary
Bumthang, Haa Valley, Trongsa and Wangdue Phodrang are not included in the seven nights of this Bhutan package tour from Mumbai. They appear on a lot of Bhutan pages as though they were. If you want them, ask and we will quote the longer itinerary rather than pretending they fit.

What Makes Bhutan Different
Bhutan measures progress by Gross National Happiness rather than output alone, and it shows in how the country is run: a constitutional requirement to keep most of the land under forest, a tourism policy built on high value and low volume, and a licensed guide with every visitor. You are not travelling through a country that has arranged itself around tourism.
Dress and Conduct
Dzongs and monasteries require covered shoulders and long trousers. Hats come off inside. There is no photography inside temple buildings, though the courtyards are usually fine. Walk clockwise around chortens and prayer wheels. Drones need prior permission and are routinely confiscated at the airport without it.
Food
Bhutanese cooking is chilli-and-cheese forward, and the chilli is treated as a vegetable rather than a seasoning. Ema datshi, chillies with cheese, is the national dish and is vegetarian. Kewa datshi with potato and shamu datshi with mushroom are milder. Red rice and buckwheat are staples, and butter tea takes some getting used to.
Hotels on the tourist circuit almost always carry an Indian vegetarian counter, so vegetarians are well served. Tell us at booking if anyone needs strictly vegetarian, Jain or onion-and-garlic-free meals. That has to be briefed to each hotel before you arrive; it is not something that can be arranged at dinner in Punakha, where the options are thin.
Festivals and Archery
Tshechus are masked dance festivals held at dzongs through the year, and the Paro and Thimphu ones are the largest. Archery is the national sport and is played competitively in most towns, usually with a good deal of singing and heckling. If your guide offers to stop at a match, take it.

Thimphu about 2,320 m, Paro about 2,235 m, Punakha about 1,200 m, Phobjikha about 3,000 m, Chele La about 3,988 m, Taktsang about 3,120 m. Mild breathlessness in the first day or two is normal. Drink water, go slowly on day one, and tell your guide if anyone is struggling.
Connectivity and Cash
Indian SIMs work only on international roaming and it is expensive. Local B-Mobile or TashiCell SIMs are available at Paro airport. ATMs are reliable in Thimphu and Paro and thin elsewhere.
Packing
Layers in every month, proper walking shoes for Taktsang, sunscreen at altitude, and a warm layer for Chele La regardless of season.
