Our Kaziranga Shillong Cherrapunji package tour from Guwahati joins the two halves of the region that most travellers end up choosing between: the grasslands of Kaziranga National Park in Assam, and the waterfalls, caves and root bridges of the Khasi Hills in Meghalaya.
Two nights in Kaziranga, four in Meghalaya and a final night in Guwahati make up the eight days. The package starts at ₹21,900 per person in the Deluxe category, on a minimum group of six.
This includes accommodation, daily breakfast, one jeep safari in Kaziranga, trek guide for the Double Decker Root Bridge and an exclusive AC vehicle for the duration of the trip as well as 24×7 coordinator support.
One thing is more important than anything else on this page before you pick dates. Kaziranga is closed to the public during the rainy season. In 2026 it shut on 29 May, and it reopens around October.
If you're travelling between June and September, then the safari at the heart of Day 02 will also be unavailable. The best-time section below tells you which months offer you both halves of this trip at their best.

This tour is an extension of a Guwahati Shillong Cherrapunji tour package in which two nights are spent in Kaziranga at the beginning and a night at the end in Guwahati.
This makes it the longer of the two choices, and the one to go for if the rhino is as much the purpose of the trip as the waterfalls.

Day-by-Day Route: Guwahati, Kaziranga, Shillong and Sohra
Arrival at Guwahati airport or railway station followed by 210 km journey to Kaziranga via NH-37 and 4-5 hours of road journey from Guwahati railway station or 250 km from Guwahati airport.
Check into your lodge. If time permits, the evening can be spent at Orchid Park and the tea gardens in the vicinity of the park.

Your jeep safari is included in the morning or afternoon time slot through the Central or Western range and is approximately two hours long.
Kaziranga is home to the world's largest population of the Indian one-horned rhino and it is possible to see them during the season on the open grassland.
In addition, the park can offer an early morning elephant safari, if available, but is not included in the package; please ask us if you want it added.

The longest leg of the journey is approximately 270 km and seven hours. The route runs back west along NH37 almost to Guwahati, then turns off at Jorabat for the 80 km climb into the Khasi Hills.
On the way in, stop at Umiam lake, where water sports are optional and paid for at the lake. Reach Shillong in the evening for a visit to the Police Bazaar, if you have the energy.

Early morning departure from Sohra, which is about 54 km from Shillong, to Elephant Falls and then Shillong Peak on the way out of the city.
Depending on the weather and how long you spend in Sohra, you can visit Nohkalika Falls, Seven Sisters Falls, Dainthlen Falls, Mawsmai Cave, Eco Park and Thangkharang Park. Bring original photo ID to Shillong Peak located within an Air Force station.

Very early morning ride out from Shillong to Tyrna, approximately 2 hours on road and then ride down to the Double Decker Living Root Bridge at Nongriat with the trek guide.
The hike is about 3,000 steps in each direction and the return trip will last between six and seven hours. Rainbow Falls is another 3 hours further on, and is only realistic for fit groups who catch up at Nongriat. Please read the trek note in the practical section prior to booking.

From Sohra to Mawlynnong, about 80 km, to walk the village and see the Balancing Rock. The Riwai Single Decker Root Bridge is just a short way away.
Drive to Umngot river at the Bangladesh border at Dawki for a boat trip paid locally and head back to Shillong which is approximately 95 km away. Photo ID is required at border checkpoints.

A morning in Shillong for the Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Cultures, Ward's Lake, the Cathedral and Lady Hydari Park, then the 100 km drive down to Guwahati, about three hours.
In Guwahati, visit Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra, stop for Assam tea at the GTAC Tea Lounge, and enjoy an evening cruise on the Brahmaputra, if desired.

Usually, Guwahati Shillong Kamakhya tour packages will have the temple visit on the final morning and this one works the same too, if time permits, before you reach the airport or station. The temple door is open to devotees at 8 AM and closes at 1 PM for the midday offering.
Special Darshan tickets have been made available online only since 15 June 2026, meaning that visiting the short-queue will require booking in advance. Tell us your departure time before booking your ticket home.

Kaziranga Safari: What to Know Before You Book
The Park Is Seasonal
Kaziranga is closed each year during the monsoon season when the Brahmaputra river floods the grasslands.
In 2026, the park closed to visitors on 29 May and then extended its scheduled closure date, and safaris were suspended in all of the ranges, including the Kohora, Agoratoli, Bagori, and Burhapahar. It resumes around October and is full-time from November through April.
Rainfall and flood timing dictates the safari dates each year, hence we confirm the safari dates for your dates before you book.
Jeep Safari and Elephant Safari
Jeep safaris run in a morning and an afternoon session and last about two hours. One jeep safari is included. Elephant safaris run only in the early morning, in limited numbers, and they typically stop earlier in the season than the jeep safaris do.
The elephant safari is not included and availability is confirmed a day in advance by the park.
Bring Original ID
Safari bookings are made against each travellers name, age and identification document. Carry the original ID you shared with us; the park checks it.
When the Safari Matters Most
The rhinos do not leave in the off-season, but the safari does, and so does the reason most people make the drive to Kaziranga.
Therefore, the best time to book Kaziranga Shillong Cherrapunji package tour from Guwahati is from November to April when the park is at its best and the roads in Meghalaya are also in good condition.

How to Reach Guwahati and Get Around
By Air
Fly to Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Guwahati. Day 01 is a four to five-hour drive to Kaziranga, offering the advantage of arriving at the park in daylight. Please provide flight information and arrival time upon booking.
By Train
The city of Guwahati has two major railway stations, one is Guwahati and the other is Kamakhya Junction, which are a few kilometres apart. Please include the station name in your ticket, to ensure the correct pick up point.
Guwahati to Kaziranga to Shillong Distance
The first leg, Guwahati to Kaziranga, is about 210 km from the railway station or 250 km from the airport, four to five hours along NH37.
The second part, Kaziranga to Shillong, is approximately 270 km and takes about seven hours, as the route heads back towards Guwahati and then turns off at Jorabat for 80 km up the hills. That is why the itinerary splits them across Day 01 and Day 03, with the safari day in between.
Kaziranga to Cherrapunji Distance
Sohra is approximately 54 km beyond Shillong, and the total distance is approximately 325 km with a travel time of 9 hours or more by car. Nobody does it in one go. The trail splits at Shillong and Sohra on the following day.
The route from Cherrapunji to Kaziranga is the same route taken in reverse. Plan it as a two-day journey rather than doing it in one stretch.

Permits and ID for Assam and Meghalaya
Indian Travellers
Indian citizens do not need an Inner Line Permit or any other entry permit for Assam or Meghalaya. The entire route will require a valid government photo ID. Unlike the states like Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram and Manipur, permits are not required in these states.
Where Your ID Is Checked
Carry originals, not only photocopies. Kaziranga checks the ID used to book your safari. Shillong Peak is inside an Indian Air Force station and may hold your original at the gate. It may be required at check posts near Dawki. At Kamakhya, carry the ID that matches any Special Darshan booking.
Foreign Nationals
Foreign tourists coming to Meghalaya are required to register at the Foreigners' Registration Office upon arrival; this is usually done with the assistance of hotels. Tell us your nationality at enquiry so the requirements for your group can be confirmed before you pay.
Best Months for Kaziranga and Meghalaya Together
The Window That Works for Both
Most travel guides split Kaziranga and Meghalaya, but on this trip you'll need both open, and both at their best.
The Kaziranga Shillong Cherrapunji package tour from Guwahati is best conducted during November-April during which the park is opened to the public and the Umngot at Dawki is clearest, while the roads are in good condition in Meghalaya.
The Trade-Off in Meghalaya
The monsoon fills the Sohra waterfalls to their most dramatic, but it also closes Kaziranga, muddies the Dawki river and makes the Nongriat steps slippery. On this path, the dry season wins.

This tour combines some of the most popular destinations in Assam and Meghalaya, ranging from floodplain grasslands to the tip of the Bangladesh plains.
Kaziranga National Park
A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985, and home to the world's largest population of the Indian one-horned rhinoceros, along with wild water buffalo, elephants, swamp deer and a large tiger population. Safaris are conducted in different areas, all having their own gate.
Shillong and Umiam Lake
Meghalaya's capital, at around 1,500 metres, with Ward's Lake, Police Bazaar and the Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Cultures. Umiam, the reservoir on the road in from Assam, is the first view of the hills.
Sohra (Cherrapunji)
Waterfalls and limestone country. Nohkalikai is the highest plunge waterfall in India at a height of 340 metres. Mawsmai Cave is the easiest cave to walk through. Sohra was once hailed as the wettest place in the world, a distinction now shared with nearby Mawsynram.
Nongriat and the Double Decker Root Bridge
Two levels of trained rubber-fig roots stretching across a stream, only accessible on foot. Meghalaya's living root bridges have been on India's UNESCO Tentative List since 2022, and India submitted the formal nomination in January 2026.
They're nominated and under evaluation, not inscribed, which makes Kaziranga the sole UNESCO site on this route.
Mawlynnong, Riwai and Dawki
Mawlynnong was named the cleanest village in Asia by Discover India in 2003. The Riwai root bridge nearby is the easy alternative to Nongriat. Dawki is located at the border of Bangladesh on the Umngot river.
Guwahati and Kamakhya
Guwahati is located on the bank of the river Brahmaputra, and the Kamakhya Temple is situated on the Nilachal Hill above the city, which is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas.
Not on This Itinerary
Mawsynram, the Mawphlang Sacred Grove, Laitlum, Majuli and Tezpur are not part of these eight days. If you wish to have any of them, please request them and we will provide the revised plan instead of trying to fit them into a packed day.
Assamese and Khasi Culture, Food and Etiquette
Two Very Different States in One Trip
One of the more striking features of this route is the change from Assam to Meghalaya on Day 03. Assam is the land of Brahmaputra plains, tea gardens and a predominantly Hindu culture, which revolves around the temples of Kamakhya.
Meghalaya's Khasi Hills are predominantly Christian, and the Khasi are one of the largest matrilineal societies in the world, with the family name and inheritance passing through the mother's line.
Etiquette
Please ask before photographing people, particularly in Mawlynnong and the villages surrounding Nongriat. In Meghalaya, Sunday is taken seriously and some shops and restaurants are closed or have limited timings.
Plastic is banned in Mawlynnong. In Kamakhya, wear modest clothing, remove shoes as instructed, and leave leather items behind; don't take photos inside the sanctum. At Kaziranga, be quiet inside the jeep and follow your guide's directions.
Food
In Assam, try an Assamese thali and, above all, the tea: Guwahati's tea lounges sell the region's orthodox, CTC and speciality leaf. In the Khasi Hills, the signature dishes are jadoh, rice cooked with pork or chicken, and dohneiiong, pork with black sesame.
While vegetarian food is readily available in Guwahati and Shillong, it is sparse in Sohra and virtually non-existent in Nongriat. Tell us about dietary needs when you enquire, as only breakfast is included.
Practical Notes
The Nongriat Trek
The descent from Tyrna takes about 3000 steps each way and is fairly steep and often damp, the climb back is harder than the descent. Allow six to seven hours for the return trip, plus about three more for Rainbow Falls.
It does not suit travellers with knee, hip, heart, breathing or mobility difficulties. Tell us at booking if anyone should skip it, and we will plan the day around the Riwai bridge instead.
Long Days in the Vehicle
Day 01 and Day 03 are long road days, and Day 06 covers a lot of ground. Motion sickness tablets help on the Meghalaya hill roads. Sit in the front if anyone in your group is prone to it.
Cash and Signal
ATMs are reliable in Guwahati and Shillong, patchy in Sohra, and absent at Nongriat and Dawki. Carry cash for entry counters and boats. Mobile signal disappears in the Nongriat gorge and is intermittent on the Dawki road.

Anyone planning to travel between June and September should know that the Kaziranga half of this trip will not run. Anyone with significant knee, hip, heart or breathing difficulty who still wants the full Nongriat trek should talk to us first.

- Tell us at this stage if anyone will skip the Nongriat trek, and if you want the elephant safari or Kamakhya Special Darshan booked.
- A 50% advance confirms the booking. Super peak bookings require 100%.
- The full balance is payable at least three days before check-in.
- Confirmation is sent by email and a company service voucher is issued.
Cancellation
Cancellation charges apply to all bookings and rise closer to check-in. There is no refund for cancellation within 72 hours of check-in, a no-show or a shortened stay. Super peak bookings carry a 100% charge once confirmed.
Ask for the full cancellation schedule and the exact super peak dates in writing before paying. Also ask what applies if Kaziranga's safaris are suspended on your dates, or if a landslide closes a Meghalaya road, and who bears the cost of any extra night.
