Getting There from Chennai

The route from Chennai to Lakshadweep involves traversing the breadth of South India and entering the Arabian Sea. Agatti is about 900 km from Chennai in a straight line. There are three ways to do it.

Flights to Lakshadweep from Chennai

There are no direct flights. IndiGo offers one ticket from Chennai to Agatti with a single change, mostly in Bengaluru, and sometimes in Kochi / Kozhikode on some days.

The existing timetable is such that a flight from Chennai departs at around 7 am and arrives at Agatti at approximately 11.30 to 12.30. That is 4 and a half to 5 and a half hours in all, in time for lunch on Day 01.

The return leg of the journey is an afternoon return flight from Agatti which lands in Chennai that very night.

If the Morning Flight Is Full

There is also a late night flight from Chennai to Agatti, but you will spend the night in the city and arrive the next morning. Some routes only run on certain days of the week. Give us your dates, and we will find out if there are flights available for you before you pay a single penny.

Three Things to Know About Agatti Flights

  • Only small planes: Agatti’s runway is very short and only propeller planes can land there.
  • Less baggage: these planes allow less luggage than a normal flight. Always verify the limit on your ticket prior to packing.
  • Few flights a day: if a flight is cancelled, you will wait a day, not an hour. Keep the day after your return free.

Chennai to Lakshadweep Ship Ticket Price

There are no ships from Chennai. Government passenger ships leave from Kochi, Beypore and Mangalore. You first fly from Chennai to Kochi or take an overnight train and then board the ship. It takes about 14 to 20 hours by sea, and ships don’t sail in the monsoon.

Fares are set by the Lakshadweep Administration and change from time to time. They’re based on the class you choose: bunk beds, second class or first class cabins. Tourists may have to pay a different rate from islanders. Be sure to check the current fare before you book.

The ship reduces airfare but increases the travel time by two or more days per trip. It does not fit into a 5-day trip.

Chennai to Lakshadweep Cruise

A cruise is a holiday on the ship with a short stop at one island, not a beach stay. Cordelia Cruises’ Lakshadweep sailings for this season leave from Kochi and Mumbai, and stop at Kavaratti for part of a day. Cordelia also sails from Chennai occasionally, primarily to Sri Lanka, check with their current schedule to see if it departs from Chennai. We also arrange Cordelia cruise packages too.

For most people, a morning flight with one change is how to reach Lakshadweep from Chennai in the least time.

Permit and ID

Everyone Needs a Permit

Lakshadweep is a protected area and an entry permit is required for all visitors, including Indians. As part of your Lakshadweep tour package from Chennai, we apply for yours.

It Got Easier in May 2026

There is no longer a requirement for a local sponsor on the islands or a police clearance certificate. The Lakshadweep police now carry out the checks following the application. The old rules are still listed on many websites.

Your Permit Names Your Island

The permit specifies which islands are allowed to be visited. Once you arrive, you can’t add another island. This Lakshadweep tour package from Chennai covers Agatti, with the boat trip to Kalpitti.

What to Send Us

Provide a copy of each traveller’s Government photo ID (Aadhaar Card or Passport) and a passport size photo. Send them early, as the permit takes time.

Foreign Visitors

Foreign nationals are allowed to visit only some of these islands and the checks are longer. Tell us your nationality when you first get in touch.

When to Go

The Season

The best time is from October to mid-May. The sea is calm and the water is clear from December to March. From mid-May to September, the southwest monsoon brings rough seas and water sports close.

A Different Rain Calendar from Chennai

October to December has the highest rainfall in Chennai. The opposite is true in Lakshadweep, where the rainy season is from June to September and October to December is the beginning of its most pleasant season. Therefore, when it pours at home, the Islands tend to be dry.

Pongal and the School Holidays

Pongal, which is in mid-January, is the best period of the year with calm, clear water. Some Tamil Nadu holidays in April- May are also suitable, but the sea gets rough from May onwards, so it is best to book the early part of the month.

Month by Month

The average temperature of the islands is 28°C throughout the year. It is not heat that determines when to go, but rain.

Agatti and the Islands Nearby

Agatti

A long, narrow coral island with a shallow, quiet lagoon on one side. The shallow water makes kayaking and snorkelling easy for first-timers, and it is home to the only airport.

Kalpitti

A small uninhabited island at the tip of Agatti. You cruise around by glass bottom boat to see the sunset and the corals.

Islands This Package Does Not Cover

This trip does not include the islands of Kavaratti, Bangaram, Thinnakara, Kadmat, Kalpeni and Minicoy. They all require a separate permit and a plan. Our Lakshadweep 5 nights 6 days package also includes a visit to Kavaratti.

Before You Pack

Cash

On Agatti, few ATMs are available and cards frequently don’t work. Indian rupees are the only currency, make sure to have sufficient cash for the entire journey.

Phone and Internet

Signal strength is weak and data speeds are slow. There is no network coverage anywhere else on the islands except for BSNL & Airtel, so please check your network before leaving Chennai.

Sun and Water

There is little shade on the beach. Take a hat, rash guard and a good sunscreen.

What to Bring

  • Water shoes for walking in the lagoon.
  • Dry bag to put the phone in on boat days.
  • Medications you are taking. There is no chemist to fall back on.
  • Light, modest clothes for walking through the village.
  • A soft bag that will fit the small plane’s baggage capacity.

Who This Trip Is For

Families

The lagoon is calm and shallow and the days are short. The group rate is ideal for a family of four. Send everyone’s ages with your enquiry.

Couples

Quiet beaches, Kalpitti sunsets and a free day in the middle suit couples well. For those who want to take a look at Lakshadweep honeymoon packages from Chennai, our Lakshadweep honeymoon package includes a candle light dinner and a room for two.

Older Travellers

Nothing on the plan is hard, and every activity is optional. Think about the change of plane, the small aircraft and the limited medical help on the island.

Not the Right Trip If

You’re looking for a night out, shopping or many restaurants, or you can’t reschedule your return date, because Agatti flights can be cancelled by weather. The Lakshadweep tour package from Chennai is ideal for those who prefer a leisurely, laid-back beach getaway.
