Seaplane Lakshadweep Itinerary: Day by Day
Report to Kochi for your seaplane departure and fly to the Kalpeni lagoon across the Arabian Sea. After the transfer and check-in, sightsee Kalpeni in the afternoon.
This includes the eastern jetty breakwater, western jetty for sunset view, Komalam Beach, Mohiyudheen Mosque, northern tip of the island and lighthouse.

The lagoon at Kalpeni is shallow and sheltered, thus making it one of the easiest lagoons to visit within the archipelago for beginners. The morning is for kayaking and snorkelling.
Afterwards, ride the glass bottom boat to the Pitti islet located within the atoll for coral gardens and reef fish and spend a bit more time on the sandbank before heading back.

The section of the trip which most people have queries about is the seaplane section between Kochi and Lakshadweep, and it is presented in full here.
The Aircraft and the Service
The Lakshadweep seaplane is operated by SkyHop Aviation that earned the DGCA's first certification for a commercial seaplane operator in India in April 2026.
The aircraft being used for seaplane services is a Viking DHC-6-400 Twin Otter which is a Canadian-built twin-engine amphibious aircraft that can take off and land on both conventional runway and on the water surface. It can carry up to twenty people including two pilots and a cabin crew member.
The trial operations from Kochi commenced in May 2026 with the support of Cochin International Airport Limited in association with DGCA, Lakshadweep administration and Airports Authority of India.
The announced network is between Kochi and Kalpeni, Kavaratti, Agatti, Kadmat and Kiltan and is part of the central government's regional connectivity scheme, UDAN.
What the Flight Is Like
The journey from Kochi to Lakshadweep takes about an hour and a half. This is a very short flight, and there are no meals or toilet facilities on board. Eat and use the facilities before you get on board and bring a drinking water supply for the transfer, don't expect service in the air.
The approach is the one that people remember. The plane lands on the lagoon instead of on a runway, and you get off the plane and onto a boat or jetty. It has limited seats, a small cabin and views are the selling point of this trip over a ship.
Weather, Delays and Why You Should Keep a Buffer
A seaplane uses water as its landing strip, meaning that the tide and crosswind affect its operations unlike other types of flights. Landings depend on lagoon conditions on the day, and the operator will not fly when they are unsuitable.
Plan your onward travel with room in it. Keep a night in Kochi at the end of the trip rather than booking a same-day connection to your home city. This is by far the best advice that you can receive on this page, and it is one that will save you both time and money.

What Changes the Price?

Charges to Check Before You Pay

Verify what meals will be provided on days of excursions, and if the Cheriyam lunch will be provided as part of the meal plan. Kalpeni has very few places to buy anything, so what is not arranged in advance is generally not available on the day.
Lakshadweep Entry Permit: What Changed in 2026
Every Visitor Needs a Permit
Lakshadweep is a restricted area, so every non-islander on a Seaplane Lakshadweep package, Indian citizens included, needs an entry permit. This rule did not change. The changes come only in how this entry permit can be acquired.
The Rules Were Relaxed in May 2026
Indian tourists don't require a local sponsor from the islands anymore; neither do they require a Police Clearance Certificate from their home police station. Security verification is now carried out after application by the Lakshadweep police.
This is important because the old procedure could take weeks and a visit to the police station. Many travel sites online are not updated and continue to list those requirements. If you have read elsewhere that you need a sponsor or a PCC, that information is out of date.
Your Permit Names Your Islands
The permit is given for specific islands. You will be allowed to visit what is listed on the permit, and you will not be able to select an additional island after arriving there.
That is why, in Lakshadweep, the choice of the island is more important than in most places, and the changes in the island must be decided beforehand, and not after the permit is issued.

Kalpeni
Kalpeni is the inhabited island where you stay, known for its wide, shallow lagoon and for the bank of coral rubble along its eastern shore, thrown up by a historic storm.
The island is quiet and small, with a mosque, a lighthouse, two jetties and a handful of beaches. It is a place to slow down rather than a place with a list of attractions.
Pitti, in the Kalpeni Atoll
The Pitti visited on this tour is the small uninhabited islet inside the Kalpeni atoll, reached by glass bottom boat across the lagoon. It is worth being clear about the name, because there is a separate and different Pitti in Lakshadweep.
Pakshipitti, on Pitti Bank north of Kavaratti, which is a declared bird sanctuary under the Wildlife Protection Act and is not open to casual visits. Several travel pages describe the bird sanctuary while selling a trip to the Kalpeni islet. They are not the same place.
Cheriyam
Cheriyam is another islet in the Kalpeni atoll and the setting for the Day 03 excursion. It is undeveloped, reached by boat across shallow water, and the appeal is the sandbank, the reef and a lunch cooked from what the boat catches.
Not Included on This Itinerary
Agatti, Kavaratti, Kadmat, Bangaram, Thinnakara and Minicoy are not part of this package. Each needs its own permit and its own transport arrangements. If you want any of them, ask and we will quote a different itinerary rather than implying they are covered here.
Best Time for a Seaplane Lakshadweep Tour
Choosing Your Dates
The Lakshadweep season runs roughly from October to mid-May, and that is the window this trip is built for. Lagoon conditions are calmer, visibility in the water is better, and the seaplane has a far better chance of operating to plan. December to March is the strongest part of the season for water clarity.
Why Seasons Matter More on a Seaplane Trip
Temperature is not the variable in Lakshadweep. The islands sit in a narrow band all year and nobody cancels a trip over the heat.
Rainfall and sea state are what decide your holiday, and on a Seaplane Lakshadweep package they decide it twice over: once for whether the lagoon excursions run, and once for whether the aircraft can land.
The Monsoon: Mid-May to September
The southwest monsoon brings heavy rain and rough seas. Passenger ships to the islands are suspended, lagoon water sports close, and the sea is not what people picture when they book Lakshadweep. This is not the window for a Seaplane Lakshadweep package.

How to Reach Kochi for Your Tour
By Air
Fly to Cochin International Airport, which is where the Kochi to Lakshadweep seaplane operates from. Send your flight number and arrival time when booking so the reporting time for your sector can be confirmed against it.
By Train and Road
Kochi is well connected by rail and road from across Kerala and the neighbouring states. Confirm your arrival point and time with our team, and allow for city traffic between the station and the airport.
The Night Before and the Night After
Accommodation in Kochi is not included in the Seaplane Lakshadweep package. We would suggest arriving the evening before your seaplane sector rather than connecting on the morning of departure, and keeping a night in Kochi at the end. Ask us to add Kochi hotel nights to your quote if you would like them arranged.
Island Life, Food and Etiquette
Lakshadweep is not a resort destination with a town attached. Kalpeni is a small inhabited island where people live ordinary lives, and visitors are guests in that setting.
Dress modestly away from the beach and the lagoon, and ask before photographing people or homes. The islands are predominantly Muslim, and it is worth being aware of prayer times and of the mosque as a place of worship rather than a sightseeing stop.
The reef is protected: do not stand on or touch coral, and do not collect shells or coral fragments to take home.
Food on the islands is seafood-led, with tuna as the staple, alongside coconut, rice and local preparations. Pork is not available. Vegetarian food can be arranged but supplies reach Kalpeni by boat, so it has to be requested when you book rather than asked for at dinner.

On alcohol, the position changed in 2026. The Lakshadweep Excise Regulation, 2026 came into effect on 5 June 2026 and replaced the prohibition regulation that had stood since 1979, moving alcohol onto a licensing framework.
Availability on any particular island and property depends on licensing being in place, and that is still working through. Ask us about your specific property rather than assuming, and do not carry alcohol with you.
Practical Notes
Cash and Payments
There is very little to spend money on at Kalpeni, but what there is will be cash. ATM access on the outer islands is limited and card acceptance is patchy. Withdraw what you need on the mainland and carry small notes.
Mobile and Internet
Coverage on the outer islands is limited and slower than the mainland, and it varies by operator. Do not plan on working from Kalpeni. Tell people at home that you may be out of contact for stretches of the trip.
Water, Sun and the Lagoon
Fresh water on the islands is limited and largely desalinated. Use it carefully. You are close to the equator with very little shade on the beach, so a rash guard, a hat and high-factor sunscreen do more than a bottle of after-sun. Reef-safe sunscreen is the responsible choice in a lagoon this shallow.
What to Pack
- Water shoes for reef entry, and a dry bag for phones and cameras on boat days.
- A rash guard or light long-sleeved top for snorkelling.
- Any regular medication, in sufficient quantity. There is no pharmacy to fall back on.
- Modest clothing for the village and the walk to the mosque and lighthouse.
- Motion sickness tablets if boats affect you, for the lagoon crossings.

Confirm the seaplane reporting time, the baggage allowance and the current operating status of your sector. Keep your permit, identity documents and trip contact details together and accessible, with offline copies saved.
