From Rongpo the road goes to Rorathang and Pakyong. Then it goes up towards Rongli. Rongli is the big town before you get to the Silk Route circuit. When you go to Rongli you need to get a Protected Area Permit.
This is something that Indian tourists must have because the Silk Route is an area near the border. You can get this permit through a tour operator or a hotel. They will ask for a government photo identification to get the permit. After you leave Rongli the Silk Route goes up really steep through forests and winding roads in the mountains.
